The
NUST Student Chapter of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
conducted a ‘Webinar’ session with Khuldoon Usman here at the School of
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME) on Wednesday, 31st
October. The topic under discussion was the prospect and the application
process of a master’s program in Germany.
Mr.
Khuldoon Usman graduated from SMME, NUST in 2016 with bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. He is currently pursuing a master’s
degree in Mechanical Engineering and
Management at the Technical University of Hamburg in Germany. Mr. Khuldoon
Usman coordinated with the IMechE NSC to share his experience with the people
of SMME in the hope that it equips them with the knowledge or skill to excel in
the field they pursue.
The video call session with Mr Khuldoon began
at around 1pm in the SMME seminar hall. The target audience were the final year
students of SMME but there were other students present as well from various
disciplines of Engineering. The Chief Operating Officer of IMecHE, Junaid Ahmed
was also present at the session along with other office bearers of the society.
The hour-long session was divided in two parts, with Mr Khuldoon talking about
the prospects of further studies in Germany in the first part and then
discussing the application procedure in detail.
Firstly, Mr Khuldoon talked about the many
benefits of pursuing further education from Germany. He informed the audience
about the relatively cheaper cost education in Germany as compared to other
European and North American countries. He then talked about the flexibility of
the master’s programs, something which is still uncommon in many Pakistani
universities. Student life in Germany was another important aspect he
discussed, talking about the monthly expenses and the part time job
opportunities for students.
Mr Khuldoon then discussed the plethora of job
opportunities in Germany after graduation, specially in the Engineering and
Automotive sector. The audience were intrigued when he discussed the average
starting salaries of Engineers in Germany. He emphasized on the importance of
learning German language if a person intends to work and live in Germany.
In the second half of the session, Mr Khuldoon
guided the audience regarding the application procedure for the German
universities. He discussed in detail about the scholarship information,
documents submission, personal statement, letters of recommendation, language
proficiency etc. Mr Khuldoon briefly instructed about the Visa process and
stressed upon the importance of following every single instruction on the
embassy website.
At the end of the presentation, Mr Khuldoon
entertained a question and answer session with the audience. Some of the
questions asked were regarding the importance of GPA during application, GRE
requirement, blocked account, financing your education etc. Mr Khuldoon
answered the questions and cleared the doubts that the students in the audience
had regarding studying in Germany.
The session ended with Mr. Junaid thanking Mr
Khuldoon Usman for taking out time from his busy schedule. The session proved
to be very helpful and beneficial for the students who are planning to apply to
Germany in the future.
